Dyson Ring Guide

A Dyson Ring is a huge structure you build around the central star of a solar system. Once it is complete, it supplies unlimited energy to all of your planets in that solar system, even planets without generators. This guide covers the mechanic; the research that unlocks it is listed in the catalog as Dyson Ring.

Unlock

Research Dyson Ring (maximum level 1) to unlock construction. It needs Energy Research 40, Energy Grid (Research) 4, Energy Density 16, Matter Compression 20 and Engine Engineering 22. The research takes an extremely long time, measured in years; this is intended, because the ring is a late-game goal.

Build a ring

  1. Open the central star of a solar system where you own at least one planet, from Galaxy. Its Dyson Ring page shows the ring's state and the build form.
  2. Choose a funding planet: one of your own planets in that solar system. The page lists which planets can pay the full cost.
  3. Start construction. The cost is paid at once from that planet; no transport fleet is needed. The cost is 8,000,000,000 Aslit, 6,000,000,000 Crlit, 4,000,000,000 Iopla and 500,000,000 SEM.
  4. Construction takes seven real days, regardless of the server's game speed. You can follow the progress and completion time on the ring's page.

Only one live ring can exist per star. If a star already has a ring, nobody can start another there until it is gone. Your rings are listed in the planet panel for quick access.

Effect

A completed ring gives unlimited energy to your planets in the same solar system. Energy stops being a limit for their mines, SEM factory and buildings there. It only helps the owner's planets, and only for that one solar system. A ring that is still being built gives no energy.

The ring as your station

From the moment construction starts, the ring is also one of your planets: it appears in your planet list and can be selected like any other planet. It is a station, not a world:

  • It has 20 fields and no mines. It produces no resources; it only stores what you deliver to it with Transport or Station fleets.
  • Only the Planetary Shipyard, Orbital Shipyard and Shield Emitter can be built there. All other buildings, mines and research are shown greyed out.
  • You can build ships and drones there, paid from the resources stored on the ring. They defend it like a planet's own fleet and drones.
  • Once complete, the ring powers itself: its energy is unlimited.
  • It does not use a colony slot and cannot be abandoned.

Hull and shield

A ring has hull and shield values that grow as it is built. At full progress the base values are 50,000,000 hull and 5,000,000 shield, each raised by 10% per level of your Hull Plating and Energy Shield research respectively.

  • The owner and the owner's alliance see the exact values. Everyone else only sees its condition: Intact, Damaged or Critical.
  • The shield regenerates 5% per hour.
  • The hull does not heal on its own. The owner can repair it on the ring's page, paid from the resources stored on the ring: a full repair costs up to half the build cost, in proportion to the missing hull. Repairs are only possible once the ring has not been attacked for 24 hours.

Attacking a ring

Other players attack a ring with the normal Attack mission, from Galaxy or the ring's page. Normal attack rules apply, such as newbie and vacation protection.

  1. First the fleet fights the ring's defenders: the owner's ships and drones built on the ring, its Shield Emitter and allied fleets stationed there. Resources stored on the ring can be looted like on any planet.
  2. If the attacker wins, the surviving ships fire on the ring itself: shield first, then hull. Bombers deal double damage to the structure.
  3. Each attacking side, either an alliance or a player without one, can take at most 20% of the ring's maximum hull per 24 hours. The 24 hours start with that side's first hit. Bringing a ring down therefore takes days, which gives the owner time to rally defenders.

Scan a ring with spy probes first: the report shows the ships and drones guarding it, like for any planet. A ring under construction can be attacked as well. Its hull grows with its progress, so it is weakest early on.

Destruction

At zero hull the ring is destroyed:

  • It stops supplying energy at once, and its star becomes free for a new ring.
  • Everything on it is lost: buildings, stored resources, queues, ships and drones parked there.
  • The owner's fleets that are away come home to another planet. Allied fleets stationed there are sent home.
  • The wreck leaves a debris field of 10% of the build cost at the star, which anyone can collect.

Tips

  • Pick the solar system where you own the most planets, since the ring only helps your planets there.
  • Gather the full cost on one planet before starting. Resources on other planets do not count.
  • Agree with your alliance on who guards the ring.
  • Keep only what you need on the ring: a destroyed ring takes its stored resources with it.
  • Build bombers to break enemy rings, and drones plus a Shield Emitter to protect your own.
